Mosaic

The sustainable material BROKISGLASS has found a new application in the form of mosaics. This eclectic format combines the material with a singular morphology to create a truly timeless concept. A fundamental role is played by the artisanal nature of the workmanship, which imbues each piece with a wholly original character.

The unparalleled craftsmanship is evident from the moment the glass is melted and continues through the processes of selecting the fragments, their arrangement in the mould, and subsequent working. One of the greatest benefits is the transformation of waste glass into a new product, which sets in motion an efficient upcycling of material with no negative environmental impacts on nature and the surrounding landscapes.

Technical information

Nomenclature, basic shapes

BROKISGLASS MOSAICS represent individual series comprising five basic shapes. The series bear the following designations: M.1. WINGS, M.2. WAY, M.3. ROCKS, M.4. HIVE, and M.5. DROPS.

Currently, there are two options to choose from:

  1. individual segments sold in packs of 12 pcs for installation by the customer;
  2. tiles mounted on fibreglass mesh packed in boxes of 3 pcs (0.95 sqm is thus packed in 3 boxes). At the same time, we also offer custom/atypical solutions, e.g. gluing on a suitable underlayment, most commonly OSB or fibreboard. Custom/atypical solutions are priced on a case-by-case basis.

Nominal dimensions

The dimensions of the mosaics, both individual segments and tiles, are specified in the pictograms. These are nominal dimensions; the final dimensions may vary slightly as a result of finishing and polishing operations. The segments have an allowable variance from the dimensions in the pictograms of +- 0.5-0.75 mm/side, tiles max. +- 5 mm/side. Atypical sizes can be ordered as a CUSTOM SOLUTION. Because the mosaics are cut with a waterjet, the smallest attainable format is 50 x 50 mm.

Thickness

The resulting thickness of the mosaics is approx. 7 mm; however, occasionally the manufacturing process may result in a slight variance (max. 1 mm) in individual segments and mounted tiles.

Weight

The average weight of an individual segment depends on its shape: M.1. WINGS – 61 g, M.2. WAY – 50.6 g, M.3. ROCKS – 76.2 g, M.4. HIVE – 65 g, M.5. DROPS – 76.8 g. For tiles, the weights are: M.1. WINGS – 1.8 kg, M.2. WAY – 1.9 kg, M.3. ROCKS – 2 kg, M.4. HIVE – 2 kg, M.5. DROPS – 1.7 kg.

Colours

There are currently three colour options to choose from: Triplex Opal BROKISGLASS (white), Smoke Grey BROKISGLASS, and Smoke Brown BROKISGLASS. The second and third options are in combination with crystal. Other colour options from our standard selection can be ordered as a CUSTOM SOLUTION; however, this will have a direct effect on the price and must be arranged by email (info@brokisglass.cz).

Texture

The texture varies from one piece to the next and depends on many factors, such as the fractions of the glass fragments, their orientation, dispersion, etc. BG is a special material, and each piece is a unique original.

Face finish

The mosaics are manufactured with a gloss finish for easy maintenance/washability.

Edge finish

The edges of the mosaics are polished, resulting in a slightly rounded appearance with a gloss finish like that on the mosaic face.

Back finish

Unless the customer specifies otherwise, the back of the segments is sandblasted, leaving a matte finish. The sandblasting has no effect on translucence. In the case of tiles, the back is finished in a white coating that ensures the underlayment (mesh, adhesive, etc.) is not visible through transparent areas of the glass. This coating does, however, result in a partial reduction in translucence.

Material

Upcycled glass from primary production of high-quality glass in Czechia with a tradition dating to 1809. No added ingredients. 100% safe, recyclable.

Other properties

  • Minimal absorptivity
  • High resistance to water and aggressive chemicals
  • Easy maintenance
  • High resistance to wear
  • High resistance to odour absorption
  • Unmistakeable colouration and texture
  • 100% safe and environmentally friendly
  • Waste from the segments is fully recycled by the manufacturer

Applications

A wide range of uses. Consideration must be given the unique properties of the mosaics. In addition to traditional applications, the mosaics can be glued on glass or used in backlighting installations, for instance, which are currently in development.

Recommended grout joint width

In the case of segments, this is up to the customer. Tiles are spaced with a 2 mm grout joint between the individual segments.

Recommended base coat

Recommended underlayment base coat prior to gluing mosaics, e.g. Ceresit CT175

Recommended adhesive

Cementitious adhesive Mapei Adesilex P9 C2TE is specially formuated for gluing glass mosaics with no vertical slip and extended open time. Suitable for interior and exterior applications.

Recommended grout

Two-component, acid-resistant epoxy from Mapei called Kerapoxy, available in 26 colours, can also be used as an adhesive.

Defects

During the manufacturing process, air bubbles may appear in the glass. This is not a defect or a sign of reduced quality and therefore may not be the subject of a warranty claim. We never ship any product that does not meet our strict quality control standards. Such anomalies are unique trademarks of handmade glass, and the presence of up to 3 air bubbles 1.5–2 mm in size per segment with sealed surface is not grounds for a warranty claim.

Small pigment spots

Though rare, small pigment spots (< 1 mm) may occasionally occur. Pigment spots are the result of minerals that are not visible at the time of manufacture but become visible during the process. Pigment spots occur more often in the Triplex Opal (white) glass. Our quality control standards do not permit pigment spots in more than 5% of the surface area. Such anomalies are unique trademarks of handmade glass.

Hairline cracks in the surface of the glass

When they appear at joints between individual fragments, they are not grounds for a warranty claim. Such cracks are superficial only and do not extend into the material, thus they have no effect on the declared properties of the material.

Visible waterjet entry point

The waterjet entry point takes the form of a subtle notch. This is entirely normal. The technology provides no way to prevent this during manufacture; however, the irregularity is minimized in subsequent operations.

M.1. Wings

There is a special beauty within each of us, just as there is in the wings of the butterfly. We find inspiration in wings, in their sophisticated shapes and colouring. The Wings mosaic takes us to a world of fantasy and instils a sense of singularity in our lives. The texture of BROKISGLASS gives the glass segments a special depth as they create an elaborate whole. The Wings mosaic is a window to an undiscovered wilderness and a pathway to our own creativity.

M.2. Way

Just as the flight of the bird shows the direction, the Way mosaic challenges us to be perceptive. In nature, this shape is manifold – the flowing of a river, horizon projections, growing plants… All of this is a sort of introspection of this shape and the places it takes us in our contemplations as we observe it. The shape is mirrored in the glassy depths of each of us. The decision on which way to set out is entirely up to us, and the mosaic thus gives us free passage to the creation of originality in our own unique works of art.

M.3. Rocks

The right sized rectangles can have a dramatic yet also soothing effect, just as rocks in nature do. Inspiration is taken from mountains, with their intimately arranged rock formations. In the mosaic, they come together in a harmonious symphony, the versatile compositions reminiscent of nature and its strength and beauty. Settings graced with this mosaic take on a new depth and become a place of art where nature blends with modern design.

M.4. Hive

In the realm of bees, as in nature also, hexagons come together in a singular blossom of life. So too our mosaic, with its hexagonal shape, evokes a subtle power and harmony, the individual pieces coming together in a unique artistic work.

Inspiration for the name Hive was taken from the hexagon, such as the one found in beehives. This mosaic lends a touch of nature to our homes and reminds us of the strength and beauty of natural shapes.

M.5. Drops

Water is the source of life and presents its beauty in the form of drops. These drops have inspired us to make a mosaic that embodies the purity and perfection of water. Every drop is unique, as is each individual piece of the mosaic. The Drops mosaic reminds us how important water is to our existence and how beautiful its various forms can be. This mosaic lets us bring the same beauty and essence into our homes that water brings into our lives.
